ABOUT D ANCHOR SHACKLES

The Anchor Shackle type D, also commonly known as the D Anchor Shackle, or D End Shackle, is a connector between the crown shackle attached to the anchor, and the end link of the swivel forerunner or a swivel shackle.

It can also connect the main chain cable to a wire rope or a synthetic rope.

The Anchor D Shackle is one of the most commonly used components of an anchor chain.

It can replace a Pear Shackle, although that would usually require an end link or a swivel forerunner connection, due to the diameter difference.

Anchor Shackles, anb more specifically Anchor D Shackles can be manufactured in Grade 2 and Grade 3 depending on the type of anchor that it is attached to.

For connecting HHP High Holding Power anchors only Grade 3 Anchor D Shackles should be used, as specified by DNV Rules.

This is mainly due to the superior mechanical properties of the material used, that should be similar to these, and we can compare the deviation from the kenter shackle used on the same anchor chain cable:

The standard Anchor D Shackle comes in a wide variety of sizes, since it's use is so widely adopted in the maritime industry. Starting at 12.5 to 20.5 mm on the smaller chain, typically for yachts. Followed by 22 to 95 mm dia chain for commercial ships, and from 100 up to 177 mm for the largest ships.
