ABOUT D JOINING SHACKLES
The D Shackle, specifically a D Joining Shackle also known as Joining Shackle type D, is a type of ship shackle used as a connector in the anchor chain.
Unlike Kenter Shackles, the D Shackle does not fit on the Chain Gypsy Wheel, and therefore it's use is more limited.
It is manufactured on grade U2 and U3, also known as grade 2 and grade 3, just as the ship chain it is connected to.

D Shackles cannot be connected directly to the common link, they need to be connected to an end link.
The D Joining Shackle can be manufactured with carbon steel, stainless steel or with alloy steel, depending on the grade and application intended.
It can be finished with black painting when it is intended for ship chain, as well as galvanized for other applications.

MATERIAL QUALITY CONTROL
Joining D Shackles can be manufactured in grade 2 and 3. For safety reasons, Joining D Shackles of grade U3 (Q3 or K3) should never be used in chains with a diameter lower than 20.5 mm.
They are manufactured typically with the same steel as the anchor shackle or other joining shackles, which is similar but slightly different than the chain, due to the higher degree of complexity involved in the manufacture process.
We can compare the chemical composition of an U3 Joining Shackle type D and an U3 SLAC of equal quality and meant for the same chain cable.

The standard Joining Shackle type D for Ships, or D Shackle, is manufactured from 12.5 to 162 mm chain. It is the most widely used from 50 mm chain to 162 mm chain.
