KENTER SHACKLES FOR SHIPS
The Kenter Shackle, technically known as the Joining Shackle type Kenter, and also referred to as the connecting link, or the detachable shackle, is one of the most popular joining shackles for ship anchor chain.
It is shaped like a stud link divided in three parts, connected by a diagonally inserted pin, that keeps together the other parts of the shackle.
It is commonly used to connect different sets of chain together, creating a seamless connection; or even to replace a broken link.
The Kenter Shackle is mainly manufactured at grade 2 or grade 3, just like our SLAC Stud Link Anchor Chain. More details on the material quality control section.

When handling Kenter Shackles in the assembly or disassembly, it is recommended to coat all surfaces with a lithium based grease, such as MIL-G-23529 to avoid wearing down the shackle, as well as shortening the operation time.
When using a hammer to introduce or remove the locking pin, it is also recommended to use a top swage shaped like the surface of the link, to avoid damages.

MATERIAL QUALITY CONTROL
Joining Kenter Shackles can be manufactured with multiple casts of steel, often of a similar but different cast as the chain, even if they are manufactured on the same grade. Kenter Shackles, due to their naturally complex shapes and multiple components, can be complicated to manufacture using the same material as the stud link, which has a very different production process. These manufacture techniques are the reason why different materials are often used across chain components and accessories of the same grade.
We can compare the difference in the mechanical properties of a standard high quality common link and kenter shackle of the grade U3:
PROPERTY | COMMON LINK | KENTER SHACKLE |
YIELD STRENGTH (N / mm²) | 637 | 656 |
TENSILE STRENGTH (N / mm²) | 777 | 786 |
ELONGATION (%) | 23 | 22 |
AREA REDUCTION (%) | 68 | 67 |
LOCATION BASE/WELD | B/W | Base |
The standard Kenter Joining Shackle is available between 12.5 mm and up to 177 mm which are the same sizes as ship stud link chain. The diameter of the Kenter Shackle is the same as the diameter of the Stud Link chain.
